OYEC stands for the Ontario Early Years Centre. I have talked about the centre a few times, usually about how I end up leaving feeling like a bad parent because either my boys tried to lick everything and everyone in the place or they stole other peoples soothers or whatnot. But this post is all about how much I love OYEC and what an awesome time we've had over the past 6 weeks participating in an Exploring Hands program.
For 6 weeks now Owen and Will and I have gone every Wednesday morning from 10am until 11:30am for fun fun fun. Basically the schedule was for half an hour of free play with any and all of the toys available to the kids, then fifteen minutes of circle time for singing and dancing and then we would move up to the eating/crafts/kitchen area for the "exploring hands" part of the program. This part entailed the kids sitting at their little tables with a tray full of something either gloopy or watery or sticky or painty that they could paint or draw of guddle about it for as long as they wanted until snack time.
The first week it was ice cubes with food colouring and a popsicle stick frozen in as a handle. The kids got to paint lovely pictures with these "paintbrushes". The second week it was jello on the tray, which we got to touch and throw and play with. Then came chocolate pudding with plastic insects in it, then antibacterial soap mixed with food colouring and glue, then play-doh, then finally, on the last day, water and bubbles. So much fun! Will loves water, so I think this was definitely his favorite.
Snack time was probably my favorite time because they not only made incredible snacks for the kids, but also for the parents! I got cups of tea, english muffins, fresh fruit...all very yummy and healthy and just what you need at that time of the day. Then clean up, reading time and one final circle time where we would sing some more and rad a story. Then finally it was time for goodbyes. Will and Owen were usually pretty cream cracked at this point and it could get a bit ugly, but one of the other mum's and I realised that if we got her daughter Beatrice to hug and kiss the boys goodbye, things always ended on a happy note.
I'm sorry the program is over because the boys loved it and so did I. It was really great to see them interactign with the other children their age and they always napped well that afternoon! Ah well, hopefully we'll be having some playdates with the other kids from the program over the summer.
Here are some photos from the last day...
The toddler room. The play area is down on the main level, with lots of different toys for the kids to play with. Owen's favorite was probably the phone, Will's was definitely the toy kitchen.
That's Will's girlfriend Beatrice.
Sue was one of the two amazing coordinators who made the morning so special each week.
Owen getting right into it with bubbles floating past.
