Its the boys' second birthday next Friday (I know! How did that happen already?!) and since it was Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend and Gran, Grandpa and Auntie Karen were coming down, I thought we should have a little par-tay. And what's a party without cake, I ask you. Trouble is, I decided that we should make the cake myself, and Amber and Andrea foolishly said they would help.
So on Friday afternoon we set about making a train cake. I'd seen some how-tos on the web, so with much excitement we set about making the cake. It was lots of fun, slightly stressful - mostly for cake-decorating pro Andrea who had to deal with me saying "Um...can you do that?" or "Can you show me how?" She was very, very patient - and awfully messy. The food colouring got all over us, our clothes, our skin, my teeth (yes, I tasted it. Doh! Blue Tooth Pergant!). But in the end, I was thrilled with the cake and the boys looked very pleased too.
Here are some photos of the whole process. Too bad I didn't capture shots of me puffing the icing powder all over the place when I turned the mixer on. Or of my stained front tooth. Yeah...too bad. Snort.
Putting the oreo cookies wheels on the trains
'Eeeeeasy! Caaaareful!" I love how concentrated we are on our work
I'm SO sorry, Andrea! I feel terrible that she got her hands stained for my boys. That's love for you right there, people!
The final product, including Animal Cracker passengers, a back-hoe in transit and some chocolate tree trunks. Fun, huh?
