Making Strides

When I think that it was only about 7 1/2 months ago that these guys were born, I'm amazed at how much they have developed in so short a timespan. They were such little teensy things when they were born, with limbs so thin it looked like they could snap. All they could do was sleep and cry and eat and poop and cry some more. They were fascinating, but I don't think I was really hooked. They were mine, but...somehow the lack of interaction just didn't make it seem real.

But this morning, as I was feeding Owen and William their breakfast, I realised just how utterly committed I am to my children. My happiness is dependent on theirs. I am their mother and they need me, but I think I might need them more. I think I'm slightly frightened by that feeling, since I know eventually they will grow up and move on and be men who don't need their mummy to kiss them goodnight anymore and then where will I be? Cuddling their kids, I suppose.

I think I've digressed from the original plan for this post, which was to talk about all the new things Owen and Will are doing these days and what interactive, expressive little boys they've become.

What prompted this post was that for the first time in a long time, they both woke up from their afternoon naps quietly - no crying. Will, who seems to have discovered his volume control recently and likes to yell random noises at the top of his lungs, just started doing his "aaaaaah, AAAAAHHHH, aaaaahhAAAHHHAaaaahHH" and Owen played with his teddy bear. That's how they normally wake up in the mornings, but naptime often involves sudden, furious crying, like someone stuck a needle in them. So I was pleasantly surprised when they woke peacefully today.

They're not crawling yet, but I think its not far off. When you put Owen on the floor, he immediately rolls on to his stomach , lifts his arms and legs so that he looks like he's attempting a freefall and then pumps his legs furiously. He doesn't go anywhere, but its probably great exercise. Will, on the other hand, can roll and roll and roll until he's across the room. He's also perfected some kind of pivoting manoeuver that means he's never where you expect him to be. William is Trouble. Baby proofing MUST happen this weekend.

They have incredible strength in their legs - probably from all that Jumperooing - and can stand up if you hold their hands. They don't need you to support them, they just need your hands for balance. And speaking of balance, neither of the boys can really sit up on their own yet (lots of wobbling and then boom! face plant!) but I keep trying to get some practice in. I remember when I was obsessed with making sure they got their "tummy time" in, and wondered if they would ever be able to hold their heads up. Now look at them!

Both boys have two bottom teeth that have come through and as soon as I can get them to hold still, I'll try to take photos of the little nubs. I think the worst of the teething pains are over (until the top two start to come through) and we're back to sleeping through the night again. There was a while there last week where I felt like I was back at the beginning again. Sleep deprivation is really not my forte. I was an emotional and rather grumpy mummy for about 4 days there!

Oh, and I haven't updated you on William's helmet, have I? We went in for a check up on May 28th and it looks really good so far. His head is definitely noticeably rounder and his ears have moved into alignment. I think they were off by 1/2" before we started the helmet. So I feel really pleased by the results and am so glad we made the decision to get the helmet. And as you can see from all the other photos, William doesn't mind wearing it at all. He gets a little hot in there sometimes, but he's so good about it. He even plays with the helmet when he's not wearing it! Silly sausage.

Right, well I'm sure there are loads of other things I should tell you about, but its getting late and I want to go to sleep. Here are a couple of pics of the boys napping last week that make me smile. I love the way Owen is holding his foot (just before I took the shot, he was actually asleep with both feet in his hands) and how relaxed Will looks. Nothing better than a nice afternoon nap, I tell ya!
