Every week I get an update from a website called Today's Parent that gives me info about my current stage of my pregnancy. Here is what it says for week 10:
Your baby is the size of a small plum, but when it comes to shape, she looks more like a shrimp. From the top of her head to the bottom of her buttocks, she is about 31 to 42 mm (1.25 to 1.68 in) long. And now, for the first time in your pregnancy, her weight is large enough to measure week by week. She weighs just about 5 g (0.18 oz).
Her eyes have formed and her facial features are becoming recognizable. Her fingers and toes are also becoming distinct.
By the end of the week, your baby's embryonic period of development finishes and the fetal period begins. During this period, she will grow rapidly and develop specialized parts of her body as the three cell layers - the ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm - form.
The ectoderm will develop into her nervous system, skin and hair; the endoderm into her gastrointestinal system, liver, pancreas and thyroid; and the mesoderm into her bones, muscles, connective tissue and blood system.
So apparently I've got a little shrimp swimming around in my tummy. Ironic since I usually ensure that shrimp never comes near my stomach. I'm going to have to take a picture of a plum so we can guage the size of what's in there!
